Summary
Before drilling holes in your tiles, look at
the following steps:
1 Preparing the work area
2 Marking the hole
3 Drilling the first hole
4 Drilling the second hole
Tools
Hole boring tool, drill, file.
Materials
Covers, Cardboard, Sticking Plaster, Tape.
Step 1 - Preparing the work area
Drilling tiles can be quite a messy business.
Be sure to cover your work area with dust sheets
to help keep it clean. You can also make a bib
out of cardboard to guard the area directly
underneath the tiles you are going to drill.
Step 2 - Marking the hole
Carefully decide on the position of the hole you
want to drill. Begin the hole with a hole boring
tool. If you do not have one, place a piece of
tape or sticking plaster over the area and mark
the spot. Set the drill to it lowest torque
position and drill slowly.
Step 3 - Drilling the first hole
While drilling be sure and stop regularly to pull
the drilled material out of the hole. Look for
brick dust to know if you have hit brick and not
mortar. Note that you must drill into brick if the
fitting is to support a lot of weight. If it is for
a lightweight fitting, drilling into mortar is not
a problem.
Step 4 - Drilling the second hole
Drill the second and subsequent holes using the
same method. If you make an error and drill a hole
in slightly the wrong place it may be easier to file
a new hole in the bracket. Or just attach it with one
less screw rather than drilling a second hole very
close by and risking the tile cracking.
